The local League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Rapids Area has been holding Candidate Forums since shortly after it was formed in 1969. The League, as a nonpartisan political organization, has always encouraged and promoted informed and active citizen participation in government. Candidate Forums have proven to be an excellent way of achieving this goal by increasing everyone's understanding of major policy issues.
A variety of forums are held throughout election years covering the various elective offices.
League Moderator and Candidates for Wisconsin District 4 Alderman at Feb.4, 2008 Forum
All Candidates who have filed nomination papers for a respective elective office office are invited to participate. The forums are open to the public and held at the River Cities Community Access Studio in the Centralia Center. It is advisable to check our League's Coming Events page on this site for information about Forums that might be held in the near future.
Although specifics may vary depending upon the particular election, the forum generally follows a set format. All candidates who filed nomination papers for the office are invited to participate in the forum. Each candidate is given a set time to present an opening statement. After this, they respond to questions collected from the audience. These questions should be directed to the office and not to a particular candidate. If the forum is being broadcast live over TV from the Community Access Studio, listeners may phone in questions at 715-423-0441. Questions will be screened by League members for clarity and to avoid duplication.
These forums are an excellent way for all citizens to meet the candidates and become informed about their individual views on the important issues facing all of us.
